24.11.24: Workshop Caminhos do Coco with Negadeza

Coco de Roda tradition – The Legacy of African and Indigenous Peoples in Northeast Brazil

Participants learn about the history of the coco tradition and Negadeza’s experiences with its matriarchal heritage, as the granddaughter of the great mestras Dona Selma do Coco and the daughter of Aurinha do Coco. She has been a prominent figure in the musical scene of Pernambuco since the 1990s, having collaborated with renowned artists such as Amelinha, Belchior, Naná Vasconcelos, Gilberto Gil, Cátia de França, Dominguinhos, Lia de Itamaracá, Paulo Moura, Jacinto Silva, Genival Lacerda, Lenine, Suzano, and Carlos Malta, among others.

Advanced and beginner percussionists have the opportunity to enhance their techniques, receive tips, ask questions, exchange information, and explore the different styles of coco de roda while experimenting with various instruments.
